The rule of thumb is that you should have your racquet strung in a year the number of times you average playing in a week. So three times a week equals three stringings per year. We have all types of string for sale and offer onsite same day stringing.
All of our string prices include the cost of stringing ($17, which will be deducted if you do your own stringing). Our string package prices begin at $22 for synthetic gut. Price of string varies depending upon material such as poly, hybrids, and natural gut. Our top of the line string is Babolat’s VS Touch Natural Gut at $57.
Following is a brief explanation of string materials and types:
Synthetic gut 16 vs 17: Sunthetic gut is the most popular mtaterial for its combination of cost and durability. Most people choose 16 over 17 because it is a little thicker gauge ( ie. Gamma brand 1.32 mm vs 1.27mm) and thus more durable. You pick up a little more power as well. Control might be slightly better with the 17 gauge, but for the average player that is not going to be that noticeable.
Polyester: The poly materials tend to be the most durable and can provide more power. So for the more advanced player that hits a lot of top spin, this is typically the string of choice. A very popular poly is Babolat's Pro Hurricane. A lot of players like at least their main strings (vertical) strung with poly, as these are typically the strings that break. To save a little money, and add back in a little more control, you can buy hybrid packs with poly for the mains and synthetic gut for the crosses.
Natural Gut: What the pros use. Money not an issue of course. Should give you the most feel and control, but you sacrifice durability.
Speciality Strings: Too many to get into a lot of detail, but a good example would be Wilson’s Superspin 16. Hexagonal shaping grabs the ball allowing for more spin.
Tension: each racquet has a recommended range of string tension. Typically between 55 and 65. The lower the tension, you increase power and sacrifice control as the ball springs off more easily. The higher the tension gives more control and less power. More advanced players tend to be in the low to mid 50's. For most average players, racquets are typically strung at the high end for greatest control.
Our current #1 selling string is Babolat's RPM Blast that is used by tennis pro Rafael Nadal among others. Not saying you will play like him, but it is a great string for both durability and control. Available in 16 and 17 gage in black only.
